Built in the
1860's by a land company, this Victorian Italianate home was the first in
the county, marking a transition from an isolated frontier settlement to
the prosperous Great Lake Port City status that evolved. The home has
remained generally unaltered in the almost 150 years since its construction,
although it has been fully and faithfully restored in accurate historical
detail. Located on a beautifully landscaped corner lot just several
blocks from downtown and the sheltered harbor area, this B&B has been
operated for 10 years with a combination of history and hospitality.
Currently the Inn's main floor is a wealth of Civil War memorabilia,
which is reflected by the themed bedrooms, antiques in most rooms and the display cases brimming with artifacts. Two bedrooms exist on the first floor, facilitating visits by those with limited mobility.
A dining room and a parlor are also on this level, with easy access to
the garden via the parlor and porch. A modern kitchen to support
the operation is immediate adjacent to the dining room.
On the second level of the Inn are two more bedrooms and a sitting
area. Each bedroom is themed and has its own private bath, one ensuite
and the other across the hall.
Towards the back of the property, and at the edge of the garden, stands
a separate Cottage building, that accommodates 2-4 people in a quiet and
private setting. On the first level is a two-car garage and storage,
while the top level is an apartment suite, comprised of a bedroom, bath, full
kitchen and a great room area with a hide-a-bed couch that will accommodate
additional guests. This upper level also features a wrap-around deck
that faces the garden. Currently the cottage is stocked with pots, pans,
linens and towels, and is rented by the week.
Owners Quarters are accessed from the first floor, and are comprised
of a living area and a loft bedroom with storage area. A modern, updated
kitchen is also a focal point for the owners.
With Lake Michigan just a short distance away at the end the main
street, the area is a summertime playground for tourists. Area attractions
abound, from the many lakes and rivers to wineries, the
Sleeping Bear Dunes
and the nationally acclaimed
Interlochen Academy of the Arts. In the winter
an abundance of snow provides a similar playground for the outdoor enthusiasts
who pursue ice fishing, cross country / downhill skiing and snowmobiling.
Since the current owners are planning to live in the area, a transition
plan for an Inn purchase and bringing new Innkeepers "up to speed" will be
easily facilitated. As an added bonus, the current owners are willing
to rent the cottage while their new home is built, bringing a steady income
to the Inn operation for a period of time.
